Probable Suicide

Just before dark last evening, the dead body of Michael McNerney, a man well
known in this city for many years, was found floating in the Mississippi at
the lower end of Rock Island. He was known to be at home in this city on Tuesday
morning, and was seen in Rock Island about noon of that day. As there were no
signs of violence upon his person, and it being a fact that he was somewhat
involved in difficulties, it is presumed that he took his own life. The deceased
was about 45 years old; has been known in Davenport as a hard working mechanic-a
blacksmith-for many years. Unfortunately he was addicted to the free and constant
use of intoxication drink, which undoubtedly laid the foundation of his troubles,
and led him into the difficulties which terminated his existence. He leaves
a wife and family of children, who are entitled to deep sympathy. The funeral
took place at 2 o'clock this afternoon.

Eileen Steele Branch of Malloy Family

Big news on the Genealogy front; Found a new branch on the family tree. I have
been sending some copies of the stuff I find to other members of the distant
family (Did I tell you I have been corresponding with John Conway from Illinois?
he is a descendent of Jeanie Malloy Conway who went to Montana around 1900)

At any rate this is a different branch, it comes from Eileen Steele, she is
the granddaughter of Michael (Mack) McNerney, Grandma’s older brother.
Are you confused yet? She and I have been sharing information and when I sent
the article about Michael McNerney [the elder] apparent suicide in Iowa she
passed that out to a brother and something clicked in his brain. He found an
old Family Bible he had for years but hadn’t mad the connection. It had
all kinds of information about Michael’s wife’s family; the mysterious
Catherine McNerney Murphy. Are you still with me? Well we now know she is Catherine
Nolan McNerney Murphy. Catherine is our great- great- grandmother. The bible
has her parents and where they came from in Ireland and all her brothers and
sisters. I know you like the Tree format so here is the perspective from Grandma.

And here is the tree from the oldest new ancestor down.

So we have a new branch; actually two the Nolan’s and Finnen’s.
They came from near Dublin in Queen’s county {which naturally doesn’t
exist any more} Does the family Name Nolan ring any bells? They were from Centre
County Snow Shoe and Bellefonte area and for a time there seems to have been
a hotel in the family. I don’t thing it was a large hotel it may have
been more like a boarding house. Various members of the family were living there
or listed in the census as hotel keepers from 1870 through 1910; Including John
McNerney’s step-father and brother-in-law Michael and Patrick Murphy.
Another bit of information is we may have misidentified the old family picture
of the Malloy’s; the old posed picture taken by a photographer we thought
was Rose and James Malloy? There was a copy of that picture in the bible and
they have no relation to the Malloy side of the family this was all Nolan and
McNerney information. They had no idea who the people in the picture were and
hoped we might know. My guess it would be of Catherine Nolan and either Michael
McNerney or Michael Murphy. But I don’t know for sure. It is way too early
to be of John McNerney. I did some research to date the clothes and best guess
is the 1870’s any ideas?

I am trying to enter and organize the information I will send you what I have
as I get it put together. I am going to send you small files of the scanned
images of the bible if you cannot read them I can send bigger files but they
may take a while to download if you have a dialup connection. Let me know.

We are all happy and healthy completely recovered from the flu. We had a very
good holiday, it seems like we always sort of have a theme to each year something
that dominates this year we had a very Lord of the Rings season. This followed
a Lord of the rings Halloween. The kids get a bit obsessive with their interest
(I have no idea where they get that trait!) so we had the DVD’s the Movie,
the action figures and even built a scale model of helms deep in the back yard.
David headed the design and idea department with Hallie and me actually doing
all the work. Then of course I had to take pictures as he set up various scenes
with his 25 or so figures. He has discovered the word “venue” and
it rolled of his tongue constantly, “now in this venue we need more rocks..
in this venue it needs to rain do you think we could use the hose mom?”
I called up the Malloy Mom “we are not even going to discuss that one”
stare for that idea, it still works.

The kids go back to school from track out on Monday Yeah!! No more juggling
kids and work for a while. Hallie is at that awkward age she is too old for
any type of Day Care and not old enough to watch herself and a little brother.
Especially when work is 25 miles from home but she keeps trying. I will be better
prepared next track out (I say that every single track out.)

Mom seems to be doing ok I think a bit tired of being tired but just looking
forward to the end of the treatment series. Good that it will come as spring
comes she always gets energized with spring and I would hate to see her dragging
when It comes time to garden and try out new plants etc.

Hope you are well and not taking on too much.

I have to get to work I have promised to send all the organized stuff to the
McNerney side of the family plus I still have Conway information to send, I
have got to either get more organized or stop making promises. I am still trying
to master the photo software I got for Christmas so think summer for the edited
pictures.

I think I will be lazy and forward a copy of this email to Kevin for Aunt Jeanne
and anyone interested in the information as I am running out of being left alone
time. David is calling me no doubt I need to affix some elf ears or restring
a bow.

Letter from Grandma O’Neil to Uncle Charles – December 1941

Following is an email from Detroit Cousin John sent on 3/26/09:

hi everyone,

When Dad passed away i took a little brown notebook with  "Private keep out" written on a piece of masking tape.  and so i did until now.  This book is Grandmother O'Neil's diary that she kept while Dad was overseas.  This is one excerpt I thought everyone would enjoy.  I am particularly intrigued with Dad's interest in a Chinese mission of this Father Waldron.  I am guessing he visited the school or church the family attended and made an impression on the young man.

Needless to say I am typing the journal up (with blessings from the patriarch of the family) with the hopes a Pittsburgh paper will print it because there's too much good karma to keep these entries in a box any longer.

cheers,

John

ps., if there is anyone who knows a private investigator in san francisco i still want to find this clinical psychologist named dr laura originally from Larrabe Iowa.  i will be in the bay area and I'd like to have lunch with the good doctor.  thanks in advance

Fri. A.M Dec-12-41

Dear Charles,

My heart is aching this morning not any more than any other day, but sometimes I can restrain myself more than other times, I must not not let these youngsters see my feelings, honest Charles I wish you could see Jack and Billie they have been saving pennies for Christmas and between them they have about three hundred and all we have heard is the rattling and the counting of them until my head is rattling, but they are so worked up and enthused over Christmas that I must help them as they don’t understand these times and it would not be fair to take the joy of Christmas from them. Well Charles for your Christmas present, I asked Margaret, Ursula, Dad, Aunt Lizzie, Mrs Griffin, Bill Stuthers Mrs Robinson, and Dolores the secretary at church and they all gave me money which I sent to to Father Waldron of the Chinese mission for your safety of soul and body and Ruth Miller is sending me a dollar today and then I will send it to one of my mission priest for your benefit.

Well Charles I was fortunate to hear, assist and offer up four masses this morning and received Holy Communion for you.

Again I beg God and His Blessed Mother to take care of you.

Mark and Valerie cake cutting – 2/4/2008

We had a get-together on Feb. 4, 2008, at Jeanne’s apartment on Belmont. All the siblings were there. And Mark announced tht he and Valerie had gotten married a couple of weeks prior by a Justice of the Peace. Someone (Chris or Penny?) bought a cake and Mark and Valerie did the standard photos of cake cutting and feedign each other. Dan Posted them here to his Flickr account

JJ and Facebook

This email came from Dan on 2/7/2008:

Someone started a Facebook group called "Bob Dylan is overrated":
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2217448244

In the founding statement of the group, they link to the JJ Letter to
the Editor titled, "Dylan way overrated", in which our father
lambastes those who love the seminal song writer:

God bless the internet.

Sick of hearing how great he is? Come join!

No matter the reason, whether it be hating his music, or acknowledging
the hypocrisy of a man that once stood for free spirit now appearing
on Victoria Secret ads for a hefty sum, this group…is for people who
think Bob Dylan is overrated.

Sure, he may have some OK songs.
But, he is by no means the best songwriter, and certainly musician, to
ever live.

An obvious reason:
Songwriting involves music and melodies too. Since he is not a good
musician, a mediocre poet at best, he cannot be considered the finest
song craftsman.

I like this article and agree….

Malloy info from cousin Betsy Qualters

Below is the copy of an email letter that Betsy Qualters — Aunt Betty’s youngest — sent to Jeanne in the summer of 2003. She has been doing research on the Malloy side of the family. She provided these two family trees.

Dear Aunt Jeanne,
I have been trying to get more information on the McNerney’s lately and wondered if you had any idea what year John or Katherine McNerney (your grandparents)died? I ask because I am cheap if I know what year they died I can get a copy of their death certificates for $3.00 if I don’t know the year they charge $30.00 an hour for searching. The information I have is that John died in 1934 and Katherine in 1941. I got that from a granddaughter of Michael (your uncle Mac) McNerney but her information is sketchy. She got most of it from Mina Katharine McNerney, oldest daughter of Michael and Jim McNerney his youngest son. At any rate she does not have too much information.
Ann Brown thinks those dates may not be right that they died earlier than that, but my mom is not sure, she says she knows that by 1937 Katharine was still alive and John was not. If you have any ideas to confuse me further let me know.
I have emailed the Red Cross and they are looking into Elizabeth McNerney’s war service and will let me know what they find out. One more McNerney question and I will leave you alone did Katherine McNerney (your aunt Katherine) live in DuBois all her life? I found her in the 1920 census in DuBois but in the 1930 census she was staying with Aunt Nora in Mt. Washington along with her Mother there was no sign of your Grandfather.

“Let’s be nice to newborn Michael”

It was 1961 and we were living on Wilkins Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Point Breeze. Jeanne was pregnant with Michael. Of course, she already had four kids ages 8, 6, 5 and 3. And she had already had a miscarriage in 1959.

Obviously she wanted to get through this pregancy with no problems. And maybe she thought if she enlisted us kids in that project, it would pay dividends. So I remember her calling us together and telling us we had to be extra nice to this new baby. And she promised he would be a very special baby in return. (I’m thinking she was just hoping he wouldn’t be like Sean. But what are the odds of having another like him? But I digress.)

So when Michael was born on Nov. 21 that year, we were all on our best behavior. And we tried to be very quiet during his naps. And to show him extra special loving. I remember really getting into it, because Mom would let me help take care of him. I was only 6-and-a-half, but I can remember giving him a bottle, with him perched very carefully on my lap on the couch. And I would help Mom bathe him.

We were very good to Michael.

Unlike Dan, whom we used to literally throw around the room like a football. But that’s a story for another day.
